LAKE NAKURU NATIONAL PARK

About Lake Nakuru

Found on Kenya’s Great Rift Valley corridor, The Lake is a phenomenon destination that has been cited by UNESCO as a world heritage site. The park is famed for the enormous number of flamingos on its shores however since 2014 the number of flamingoes arriving in the alkaline shores of lake Nakuru has dwindled due to the increase in the level of water in the lake making it no longer favorable for the pretty creatures, this is another saddening effect of climate change, with the efforts directed here, scientists have predicted that we might see the flamingoes grace the shores in the near future.

Other than the sparkling white birds Lake Nakuru’s 170 square kilometers is rich with fascinating wildlife and over400 bird species, both black and white rhinos are seen in mornings grazing on the short grass by Lake Nakuru, Rothschild’s giraffes and gazelles are seen grazing around the National Park too.

Being a couple of hours from Nairobi Lake Nakuru is often used as a stop over on your way to Masai Mara or on a voyage to Laikipa plateau and Mount Kenya National park, a night to recharge from an otherwise very long one way journey. A two day stay in Lake Nakuru is enough to fully explore the rift valley area.

A variety of accommodations are available in Lake Nakuru National park and the nearby Nakuru town. Luxurious hotels, safari lodges and mobile camps are all available depending on what you prefer. Accommodations in the park offer services of a very high caliber.

Lake Nakuru is surrounded by other rift valley lakes that are also fun to visit, Lake Naivasha is a fresh water lake with plenty of birds and hippos, a visit in this slightly urban area gives you a chance to take boat rides and do some community tour in friendly Naivasha. Another lake is Lake Elementaita which is found in a slightly remote setting the undisturbed lake and its ecosystem has glorious views that visitors who go out of their way to get here can enjoy.

Lake Bogoria found north of Lake Nakuru despite its water levels rising there has been some lesser flamingoes observed in it.
