VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK

About Volcanoes

Volcanoes National park is a unique destination in Rwanda and the world as it is found about 15,000 feet high, a range of protected steep slope found in the grand mountain range that stretches across countries known as Virunga massif.

The National park is where about half of the world’s Gorilla population is found, golden monkey who are very fascinating themselves call the virunga home too. Virungas and subsequently volacanoes National park evergreen rainforest, immaculate bamboo forest, swamps and heath make up a very beautiful mosaic of diverse vegetation another great attraction to those who trek its paths.  

The name of the dormant volcanoes that make up the volcanoes National park are Karisimbi which at 4.507m is the highest, Bisoke with the verdant crater lake, Sabinyo, Gahinga and Muhabura are the other volcanoes in the volcanoes National park chain.

Activities

Tracking gorillas is the prime Volcanoes attraction. Trek through the lush green forest for about an hour and a half and meet up with the gigantic mountain gorillas, hiking and finally coming face to face is very magical and watching the gorillas maneuver and play around is even more climatic. You may also take a trek through the bamboos to experience the beautiful golden monkeys and witness their impressive antics

Culture tours to a nearby village just outside the park is another activity that lets you connect with the great Rwanda culture.  A very exciting beat of the drum welcomes you to the Iby’iwasu village, with its local Rwandese are engaged in colorful dances with huge smiles welcoming you into their home.

A journey to musanze caves and a hike along the enormous Crater Lake are other rewarding experiences from the volcanoes national park.

Nyungwe National Park

About Nyungwe

Breathtaking, if you were to associate one word with this forested National park it would be breathtaking. Nyungwe national Park is a phenomenon of nature with beautiful diverse species of plants and flowers covering its many slopes. With 1,068 plant species and 140 orchids the park’s beauty is beyond compare.

The Park also boast around 12 primate species including 400 habituated Ruwenzori white and black colobus, chimpanzees that are in the mountain ranges are the park’s huge draw as it tops many tourists’ lists. Other animals in the park, large mammals to be precise are cerval cat, clawless otter, mangoose and leopaards however rare their sightings might be.

Activities

You may hike in Nyungwe and track the primates, this is on top of many travelers’ lists who make it here. There are 15 trails through the beautiful green forest on your way to the Chimpanzees destination, however chimps are not the only primate attraction in Africa’s most diverse primate destination, on your way you will spot the L’Hoest monkeys and owl faced monkeys endemic to the Albertine rift, impressive and fascinating creatures in their own right.

A memorable and photogenic experience in Nyungwe will be walking up the magnificent Lsumo waterfall and a walk along the canopy walkway on a suspension bridge 60 meters above the park. Being on the only canopy walk way in whole of East Africa is very exhilarating more so is looking down at the giant trees and thick forest together with its wildlife beneath you.

The park’s 322 birds makes Nyungwe another fascinating area with incredible bird life. Bird watchers really enjoy the trees and the birds living in them very much.

LAKE KIVU & RUBAVU

About Lake Kivu

Lake Kivu adjacent to Rubavu town, is africa’s six largest lake with an area of 2,700 square kilometers and being a rift valley lake lake Kivu has an enormous depth of 485 meters. The lake covers a significant part of Rwanda’s western border to Congo DRC.

Lake Kivu is a very safe lake to freely explore, fish and do a lot of lake activities as there are no reported sights of hippos or crocodiles unlike other rift valley lakes.

Rubavu

Rubavu a town bordering the Lake at its north was once a colonial resort so its lined up with old mansions, hotels, restaurant and bars and being on the waterfront it is a great place to stay while exploring Lake Kivu and offer a dreamy sight in the sunrise and sunsets, so be sure to have delicious lake delights watering the, with a daiquiri, a perfect sundowner.

Activities

Apart from the normal exhilarating stuff that is done in the lake such as boat rides, diving and fishing, the adjacent town of Rubavu is the beginning of the Congo Nile trail of about 220 km down south to Rusizi town. Following the trail takes you over and through hills and valleys giving you unimaginable impressive scenic views.

Biking is another option to alternatively explore the land in Rubavu. The region is mountains with plenty of hills and valleys so an exploration of the landscape is very rewarding.

Some gorgeous birds such as pelicans, crowned cranes and Kingfishers are found on the shores of Lake Kivu giving you a unique birdlife experience.

KIGALI

About Kigali

The Capital of Rwanda is centrally located in this mountainous country. The Capital’s landscape is surrounded by hills and mountains making a remarkable scenic city. Nicknamed by its visitors the green city, Kigali is exceptionally clean and neat and very impressive to see for first time visitors, this is actually a testament to the nature and culture of the Rwandese community.

The city is among the fast growing cities with new malls, gigantic office buildings and world-class convention centers inspired by the old King’s palace bringing about a unique modern cultural architecture. Great restaurants and bars to wine and dine with world class standards and that offer amazing panoramic views are cropping out all around the city giving its visitors first-class services that have a very rich cultural background.

The Capital is among a few of the cities in Africa with a very radiant art-scene. Places like the Kigali cultural village offers a stage for local artisans and local food vendors to display and trade their art to the people.

A visit to Rwanda and Kigali is not complete if you have not gone to one of the several genocide memorial in Kigali. Here you get to learn about the tragic history of the 1994 genocide that claimed over one million Rwandans. The memorial and burial grounds display how a community sucked in war and misunderstanding reconciled and healed over the years. The gut wrenching recounting of the events also serve as an educational experience on the values of dialogue, understanding and not allowing civil conflicts to escalate.

AKAGERA NATIONAL PARK

About Akagera

In North eastern Rwanda right at the border lies a stretch of savannah, woodlands, papyrus swamps, rolling highlands and a dozen lakes creating one eof Africa’s scenic destination the Akagera National Park.  The Park gets its name from river Kagera on its eastern boundary that flows through and dumps its waters to the labyrinth of lakes in the park, with the largest Lake Ihema another remarkable feature for tourists in the park.

Akagera covers 1,122 square kilometers and being mainly dominated by wetlands it becomes the largest wetland park in whole of Africa.

The Park offers a wide range of accommodations for everyone from luxurious lodges in side the park to modern world class camps on the North side of the park, so all visitors of Akagera expect comfortable and classy accommodations making a trip here ever more relaxing.

Activities

The Park’s luscious game can be viewed mainly by a guided drive (very recommended as there are skilled guides here) or self-drive through the savannah. Notable game in Akagera savannahs are Elephants, Buffalos, Zebras, elands, topi, Giraffes, Roland antelopes and Eland. Akagera  papyrus swamps has amazing species of wildlife sitatunga and sought after shoebill stork. Monkeys like olive baboon, vervet and the secretive blue monkeys are some of the other primates that are in the park.

On the larger predators leopards, jackals, hyenas, and the recently introduced prides of lions are some of the predators that grace the park. Eighteen black rhinos were introduced in the park completing the Big five family that tourist seek to be available in Akagera.

The park also is an arena for bird watching which birders much appreciating the great variety of birdlife in the park, papyrus gonolek, red faced barbet and swamp flycatcher are some of the much sought after birds making up over 500 species of birdlife in the park

You can also have a unique safari experience and sail through Lake Ihema enjoying the pods of hippos in the lake and the crocodiles lazily floating in the water.
