Tanzania Safari Destinations
Wild Tanzania.
Three Epic Circuits.
From the Serengeti's endless plains to the southern wilderness of Ruaha and the chimpanzee forests of the west — Tanzania offers three distinct safari circuits, each extraordinary.
Africa's Ultimate Safari Nation
Tanzania protects more land under conservation than almost any other country on Earth — 28% of its total land area. This extraordinary commitment produces an unrivalled density of wildlife across three distinct safari circuits, each offering a completely different experience. The Northern Circuit delivers the iconic Serengeti and Ngorongoro classics; the Southern Circuit rewards those seeking true wilderness solitude; and the Western Circuit opens the door to chimpanzees, hippo spectacles, and Africa's largest lake. At The Extreme Wilderness — born and based in Arusha — these are our home parks.

The Classic Safari — Most Wildlife, Most Icons

The Greatest Wildlife Show on Earth
Serengeti National Park
The Serengeti is Tanzania's most iconic safari destination, spanning 14,763 km² of endless golden plains. Home to the world-famous Great Wildebeest Migration — over 1.5 million wildebeest and 500,000 zebra moving in an eternal circle — it is one of Africa's most spectacular natural phenomena. Beyond the migration, the Serengeti teems with resident lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, and hundreds of bird species year-round.
Wildlife

The World's Largest Intact Volcanic Caldera
Ngorongoro Crater
Ngorongoro Crater is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Africa's greatest natural wonders. The 260 km² caldera — the world's largest intact volcanic caldera — forms a natural enclosure for an extraordinary concentration of wildlife. Over 25,000 large animals live within its walls, including one of Africa's densest populations of lions and the endangered black rhino.
Wildlife

Land of Giants and Ancient Baobabs
Tarangire National Park
Tarangire is famous for its enormous elephant herds — the largest concentration of elephants in northern Tanzania. The ancient baobab trees that dot the landscape create an otherworldly atmosphere, while the Tarangire River attracts a staggering diversity of wildlife during the dry season. Often overlooked in favor of the Serengeti, Tarangire offers an equally thrilling safari experience with far fewer visitors.
Wildlife

The Tree-Climbing Lions of the Rift Valley
Lake Manyara National Park
Lake Manyara National Park is one of Tanzania's most scenic parks, set against the dramatic escarpment of the East African Rift Valley. The alkaline soda lake — covering two-thirds of the park — turns flamingo-pink during the dry season. Manyara is famous for its tree-climbing lions, a phenomenon rarely seen elsewhere in Africa.
Wildlife
Western Circuit
Chimpanzees, Remote Wilderness & Lake Tanganyika

Chimpanzee Trekking in Pristine Wilderness
Mahale Mountains
Mahale Mountains is one of Tanzania's most remote and magical destinations — accessible only by boat or charter plane. The park protects one of the last wild chimpanzee populations, and trekking through the rainforest to encounter these remarkable primates is a life-changing experience. After the trek, relax on the pristine white beach of Lake Tanganyika.
Wildlife

Tanzania's Last True Wilderness
Katavi National Park
Katavi is Tanzania's most remote and least-visited national park — a true wilderness where you might go an entire day without seeing another vehicle. During the dry season, thousands of hippos crowd the shrinking pools of the Katuma River in dramatic congregation, while massive buffalo herds and big lion prides create scenes of raw, unfiltered Africa.
Wildlife

Jane Goodall's Chimpanzee Kingdom
Gombe Stream National Park
Tanzania's smallest national park, Gombe Stream is where Dr Jane Goodall began her legendary chimpanzee research in 1960. On the forested shores of Lake Tanganyika, you can trek to meet wild chimpanzees — primates sharing 98% of our DNA — in their natural rainforest habitat. Accessible only by boat.
Wildlife

Africa's Largest Lake
Lake Victoria
Lake Victoria is the world's third-largest lake and Africa's largest, straddling Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda. The Tanzanian shores offer a fascinating off-the-beaten-path experience: Rubondo Island National Park, Sukuma cultural immersion in Mwanza, island hopping, and spectacular sunsets over the vast water.

Remote, Wild, Uncrowded — Africa Undisturbed

Tanzania's Largest Park — Wild and Remote
Ruaha National Park
Ruaha is Tanzania's largest national park and one of Africa's best-kept secrets. Remote, wild, and uncrowded, it offers an authentic wilderness experience with superb predator sightings — including large lion prides, abundant leopards, cheetah, and endangered African wild dogs. The Great Ruaha River is the lifeblood of the park.
Wildlife

Africa's Largest Game Reserve
Nyerere (Selous) National Park
Nyerere National Park — formerly Selous — is the largest protected area in Africa, covering 54,600 km². A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it offers diverse safari activities beyond the typical game drive: boat safaris on the Rufiji River, walking safaris, and fly-camping. This is Tanzania's ultimate off-the-beaten-path adventure.
Wildlife
Zanzibar & Arusha
Every great Tanzania safari begins in Arusha and often ends on the white sands of Zanzibar.

Spice Island Paradise
Zanzibar Island
Zanzibar is the jewel of the Indian Ocean — a tropical paradise of white powder beaches, turquoise waters, and coral reefs teeming with marine life. Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offers winding alleyways, ornate Arab doors, and a rich history as the ancient spice trade hub. The perfect ending to any Tanzania safari.

Gateway to the Northern Circuit
Arusha & Kilimanjaro
Arusha is Tanzania's safari capital and the gateway to the Northern Circuit. Nestled between Mount Meru (4,562m) and within sight of Kilimanjaro (5,895m), Arusha offers its own national park with flamingo-fringed lakes, colobus monkeys, and giraffe. It's also your base camp for Kilimanjaro treks and northern safaris.
Best Time to Safari in Tanzania
Tanzania is a year-round destination. Each season brings different advantages — from peak migration crossings to lush green landscapes and calving season drama.
Jun – Oct
Long Dry Season
Peak safari season. Best wildlife across all parks. Migration in Serengeti/Mara (Jul–Oct). Book 6–12 months ahead.
Nov – Dec
Short Rains
Short afternoon showers. Lush landscapes return. Good bird watching. Less crowded with better rates.
Jan – Feb
Short Dry Season
Excellent game viewing. Wildebeest calving (Jan–Feb) in southern Serengeti. Zanzibar at its best.
Mar – May
Long Rains
Heaviest rains. Some roads impassable. Very low visitor numbers and best lodge rates. Lush green scenery.
The Great Wildebeest Migration — Follow It Year-Round
The Migration never stops — it just moves. Calving in the Serengeti's south (Jan–Feb), north through the Seronera (Mar–Jun), Grumeti River crossings in the west (Jun–Jul), dramatic Mara River crossings in the north (Jul–Oct), then back south again. We design itineraries around wherever the herds are.
