Kenya Safaris
Wild Kenya.
Extraordinary Encounters.
From the thundering hooves of the Great Migration to the gentle giants of Amboseli — Kenya offers Africa's most iconic wildlife spectacles, ancient cultures, and pristine Indian Ocean beaches.
Africa's Original Safari Destination
Kenya has inspired safari travellers for over a century — and for good reason. It is home to the planet's greatest wildlife spectacle (the Great Migration), the last two northern white rhinos on Earth, some of Africa's finest luxury lodges, and a coastline of extraordinary beauty. At The Extreme Wilderness, we design Kenya safaris that go beyond the obvious — combining iconic reserves with hidden gems, conservation experiences, and deep cultural encounters for a journey that resonates long after you return home.

The Great Migration Crossing
Masai Mara
The Masai Mara is Kenya's most famous reserve and the northern extension of the Serengeti ecosystem. From July to October, witness the dramatic river crossings as wildebeest plunge into the Mara River — one of the most spectacular wildlife spectacles on Earth. Year-round, the Mara offers outstanding predator action with large lion prides, leopards, and cheetahs.

Elephants Beneath Kilimanjaro
Amboseli National Park
Amboseli National Park is one of Africa's most iconic destinations — a park where enormous elephant herds roam against the snow-capped backdrop of Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest mountain. On clear mornings, the mountain rises in extraordinary detail above the savannah, its glaciers visible from the open plains. The park supports over 600 bird species and reliable populations of lion and leopard across its swamps, open grassland, and acacia woodland.

Activities

White Coral Sand and Swahili Culture
Kenyan Coast
The Kenyan coast stretches for over 500 kilometres along the Indian Ocean, offering white coral sand beaches, turquoise water, and living Swahili coastal culture. Mombasa — East Africa's oldest port — anchors a coastline dotted with coral reef marine parks, ancient Arab trading settlements, and some of the finest beach resorts in Africa. Malindi, Watamu, and Lamu Island each offer distinct character within a single spectacular coastline.

Activities

The Flamingo Lake and Rhino Sanctuary
Lake Nakuru National Park
Lake Nakuru National Park protects an alkaline lake famous for its extraordinary flamingo flocks — at peak season, up to two million lesser flamingos turn the shoreline entirely pink. The park is also one of Kenya's most important rhino sanctuaries, sheltering both black and white rhinos within an electrified perimeter fence. Rothschild giraffe, lion, leopard, and large buffalo herds complete the wildlife picture.

Activities

The Last Northern White Rhinos
Ol Pejeta Conservancy
Ol Pejeta Conservancy is home to the world's last two northern white rhinos — Najin and Fatu — under permanent armed guard, making it one of the most significant conservation sites on the planet. The conservancy also shelters the largest black rhino population in East Africa and East Africa's only chimpanzee sanctuary, where rescued chimps live in a large forested enclosure. Safari game drives cover sweeping open grassland with Kilimanjaro visible on clear days.

Rare Northern Species in Arid Wilderness
Samburu National Reserve
Samburu National Reserve is one of Kenya's most distinctive wildlife destinations — a rugged, semi-arid landscape along the Ewaso Ng'iro River that supports an extraordinary community of northern endemic species found nowhere else in Kenya. The 'Samburu Special Five' — Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, Somali ostrich, gerenuk, and beisa oryx — are the main draws, alongside remarkable leopard sightings and the Samburu people's vibrant culture.

Kenya's Largest Wilderness
Tsavo East and West National Parks
Tsavo East and West together form Kenya's largest national park system, covering over 20,000 km² of diverse habitat from semi-arid plains to rocky lava flows, volcanic hills, and palm-lined rivers. Tsavo East is famous for its red elephants — tuskers that turn red-orange after rolling in the iron-rich dust — while Tsavo West offers the Mzima Springs, where crystal-clear water bubbles up from lava rock and hippos can be viewed through an underwater window.

Best Time to Safari in Kenya
Kenya is a year-round destination, but timing your visit around the Great Migration crossing or the dry season maximises your wildlife encounters.
Jan – Feb
Short Dry Season
Excellent game viewing — low grass, animals congregate at water. Great for Amboseli & Samburu.
Mar – May
Long Rains
Lush green landscapes and newborn animals. Fewer tourists and better rates. Mara still productive.
Jun – Oct
Peak Season
Great Migration river crossings (Jul–Sep). Best wildlife throughout Kenya. Book 6–12 months ahead.
Nov – Dec
Short Rains
Migratory birds arrive. Landscapes bloom. Good value and manageable crowds.
The Great Migration — Nature's Greatest Show
Over 1.5 million wildebeest and 500,000 zebra make an epic clockwise loop between Tanzania's Serengeti and Kenya's Masai Mara, driven by rainfall and fresh grazing. The Mara River crossings — where thousands of animals plunge through crocodile-infested water — occur July to October. Combine Kenya and Tanzania for the full Migration experience year-round.
Kenya + Tanzania:
The Complete East Africa Safari
Kenya and Tanzania share the Great Rift Valley, the Serengeti–Mara ecosystem, and Kilimanjaro's shadow. Together they form the world's premier safari circuit. At The Extreme Wilderness, we specialise in cross-border itineraries that seamlessly combine the best of both countries — Masai Mara crossings, Serengeti plains, Ngorongoro Crater, Amboseli elephants, and Zanzibar beaches — in one unforgettable journey.

Kenya: Africa's Premier Birding Destination
With over 1,100 recorded bird species — including the rare Shoebill, Jackson's Widowbird, and the Abyssinian Ground Hornbill — Kenya is a birder's paradise. Lake Nakuru's flamingos, Samburu's Somali ostrich, and the Masai Mara's raptors are just the beginning.
