Day-by-Day Itinerary
1Arrive Kigali
Arrive at Kigali International Airport and transfer to your hotel. Kigali's clean streets and vibrant food scene make it one of Africa's most surprising capitals.
2Kigali Genocide Memorial
Visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial. Walking through the exhibition halls and gardens — where 250,000 victims are buried — is a solemn but vital experience for understanding Rwanda's journey from tragedy to one of Africa's most progressive nations.
3Drive to Akagera — Genocide Survivors' Community
Drive east toward Akagera National Park. En route, stop at a women's farming cooperative run by genocide survivors — a remarkable example of reconciliation and resilience. The community welcomes visitors and shares their story through guided tours of the cooperative.
4Akagera National Park — Savannah Game Drives
Morning and afternoon game drives in Akagera — Rwanda's only savannah park, recently restocked with lions and black rhinos. Elephants wade through papyrus swamps, hippos claim the lake shallows, and crocodiles bask on the banks. The park's varied habitats support over 480 bird species.
5Akagera — Boat Safari and Night Drive
Morning boat safari on Lake Ihema — hippos, crocodiles, and dense waterbird colonies at close range. Afternoon bicycle ride through the park buffer zone. Evening night drive reveals civets, genets, servals, and bush babies hunting in the darkness.
6Drive to Nyungwe Forest
A seven-hour drive southwest across Rwanda toward Nyungwe Forest National Park. En route, visit the reconstructed palace of the Rwandan royal family at Nyanza, with traditional dance performances by the royal dance troupe. Arrive at Nyungwe by evening.
7Nyungwe Forest — Chimpanzee Tracking
Nyungwe is one of Africa's oldest and largest montane rainforests, sheltering 13 primate species. Today's focus is chimpanzee tracking — following a habituated community through the dense forest canopy. Over 300 bird species have been recorded here, including Albertine Rift endemics.
8Nyungwe — Canopy Walkway and Colobus Monkeys
Walk the Nyungwe canopy bridge — suspended 50 metres above the forest floor — for a bird's-eye perspective on the rainforest. Afternoon guided trail to locate the famous 400-strong troop of Angola colobus monkeys, the largest primate troop in Africa.
9Gorilla Trek — Volcanoes National Park
Drive north to Kinigi and set out to track a habituated mountain gorilla family in the Virunga bamboo forest. One hour spent in the presence of these great apes — watching silverbacks, mothers with infants, and curious juveniles — is a life-changing encounter. Visit the Muheza gorilla veterinary project afterwards.
10Golden Monkey Tracking
Return to Volcanoes National Park for golden monkey tracking. These brilliantly coloured primates — found only in the Albertine Rift — move through the bamboo forest in fast-moving groups, making them a thrilling and photogenic subject.
11Lake Kivu — Rubavu
Drive to Rubavu (Gisenyi) on the shores of Lake Kivu. This emerald-green crater lake is one of Africa's Great Lakes, flanked by colonial-era mansions and vibrant fishing communities. Afternoon kayaking on the lake, then sundowner cocktails overlooking the Congo border as the last light fades on the water.
12Departure — Kigali
Drive back to Kigali International Airport for your flight home. Twelve days of primate encounters, cultural depth, and natural beauty across one of Africa's most extraordinary countries.
